Charlie is turning 2, and after an unsuccessful bid to buy tickets, Teddy, PJ, and Gabe get caught sneaking Charlie into The Gurgles sold-out concert for preschoolers. Meanwhile, Bob somehow winds up with a stolen miniature horse for Charlie's birthday party, landing both he and Amy behind bars.[1]

Plot[]

It's Charlie's second birthday and the family are in jail, even Amy and Bob are there. They ask for an explanation and while the kids are reluctant at first, P.J. says it’s all Teddy’s fault, she does protest, but he points out that she promised Charlie a present she couldn’t even get.

The story then cuts to just a few days earlier, Teddy is doing a video diary after she finishes, everyone wants to give Charlie a good present. They want this to be the birthday of a lifetime, especially since Teddy had a sad 2nd party when she didn’t get the gift she wanted, a toy chihuahua cowboy named Howdy Puppy. Bob's idea of giving involves running in him getting a horse at the stables. Charlie's love for the Gurgles (a popular children TV show) gives Teddy the idea to buy tickets to their next concert. To her dismay though, the concert sells out before they can get tickets. P.J. mentions that they can win tickets by entering a video contest that he heard about on KIDZ radio. So, with the help of PJ and Gabe, Teddy tries to come up with the perfect idea for the video, but she shoots down her brothers’ ideas such as Gabe putting on Gurgle's underpants or shooting Charlie out of a cannon and PJ performing a child song. In the end Teddy took control and made a video of Charlie doing a glow in the dark dance. Meanwhile Gabe got ahold of the mini horse and carriage and made it his own, just to make Austin (who was bragging about his dog) jealous. Bob is shocked, but doesn’t make it known. Eventually the horse escapes, much to Amy and Bob’s dismay, so they look for it.

On the day of the concert, their video doesn't win (a kid wearing 100 underpants won, leading Gabe to say "I told you so"). Without any other option, Teddy and her brothers do whatever they can to get tickets. First, they go to the hotel the Gurgles are staying at, (P.J. knew where since he is a Gurgles' fan club member and the only one who reads the fan facts, although Teddy points out he is the only fan that can read) and ask one of them for tickets (even offering them chicken), but that doesn’t work, even after PJ performs a song that he wrote they still get sent away. Teddy, Gabe and Charlie decide to go to the concert and try to sneak in from having the usher taking pity on them, from faking a heart attack, to posing as exterminators (they eventually rush in after distracting an usher). After fixing up the house for the party, Animal Control pays Bob and Amy a visit, the officer was trying to catch a chipmunk beforehand. She was able to find the horse, but it turns out the horse was stolen property which both Bob and Amy are shocked to hear, Amy insists Bob rented the horse for the party. After asking for a rental agreement, Bob says that he doesn’t have one, all he got was a sweaty handshake and the man took off in his dark van. Amy tries to bribe the officer to make her leave, but that did not work. Meanwhile, PJ tries to sell one of his songs to one of the Gurgles, but he fails, especially since he was waiting in the room the whole time. As a result, they all end up in jail, for trespassing, theft and harassment, but surprisingly, one of the Gurgles sang one of PJ's songs to the other Gurgles. He sells the song and uses the money to get the Duncans out of jail.

In the end, Charlie's birthday was unforgettable and while Charlie never got to see the Gurgles, she now loves a show called the Buttercups.

Running Gags[]

Good Luck, Charlie[]

Teddy: If you ever want to see The Buttercups in concert, good luck, Charlie.

Memorable Quotes[]

Gabe: Now, at this point, a jerk would say "I told you so". I told you so!
Stan: I can't believe I went to Yale. Now, I'm a Gurgle.
Policeman: I'm guessing the dog is in the pound.

Amy: We don't have a dog, Officer Snootee.

Policeman: It's pronounced snoo-Tay.
Amy: Here we go, still whining about "Hello Doggy". Teddy: Howdy Puppy, the rootinest tootinest little chihuahua in the West. I wanted him more than anything in the world and I Oh, too soon.
Amy: Honey, Charlie's party is in three days.

Bob: Oh, honey, come on, relax. I'll think of something. Okay, we'll do a clown, a bouncy house whatever.
Amy: Bob, honey, you have to reserve those things. We have to decide on something good or it's gonna be Hello Doggy all over again.

Teddy: Howdy Puppy!

  • Viewership: 4.2 million, fourth most-watched episode of season 2.
  • This was the first time the Duncan family was arrested.
  • The episode plot is similar to Charlie is 1.
